Night view of a wooden building with illuminated signs and string lights. The sign reads 'The Eden General Store, Carlos and Harleys, Fresh-Mex Cantina.' There is an illuminated pink 'Open' sign in the window, and cars are parked in front.

Carlos & Harley's is a fresh Tex-Mex cantina steeped in the history of Eden's 1881 general store.

  • The Eden General Store building has a rich history as one of the town’s earliest landmarks in beautiful Ogden Valley since its construction in 1881.

While it has gone through several different reiterations of a store throughout the years, it wasn’t until 2009 that it became Carlos & Harley’s Fresh-Mex Cantina.

In 2021, the cantina changed ownership and a new vision for Carlos & Harley’s was born. While honoring the building’s past and the iconic mercantile storefront, the interior has undergone selective renovations — breathing new life into this historic space. Some updates have been functional, like the plumbing and electrical systems. Others include the mountain modern interior remodel that preserves aspects of the original building materials while creating an elevated and inviting atmosphere.

From the very beginning, the building has served as a place for the Eden community to gather. And now, whether you live here full time, are visiting from surrounding areas, or while on a ski trip, our hope is that Carlos & Harley’s Cantina will be a place you come back to again and again — for the excellent food and company.

Our chef and kitchen designed the cantina’s menu to celebrate the freshest ingredients and flavors inspired by traditional Mexican cuisine. Chef specialty plates like Molcajete or the Poblano Salmon will delight your taste buds. There are also many gluten-free and vegetarian options.

We offer a full bar with exciting new drinks as well as the classics — all made with top shelf liquors. Order a Mango Habanero Margarita created with house-made fresh mango and habanero pepper purée, a Cherry Pucker that uses local spirits from New World Distillery, any of our large selection of craft beers, hard kombuchas, or wines, and you will surely find a new favorite drink. Wherever possible, we pride ourselves in incorporating local or Utah made ingredients.

From the entire cantina family — management, kitchen, and serving staff — thank you. We appreciate all the positive reviews and patience during this exciting new chapter of Carlos & Harley’s Fresh-Mex Cantina.

  • The Eden General Store was originally built in 1881 by Elija Wilbur, who reportedly learned woodworking techniques from Brigham Young. In the early days of Eden, the general store had an old dance hall on the top level and the small east corner of the store served as a post office.

It was a general mercantile that stocked everything from beans, buggy whips and hip boots. Drawers of cloth, buttons, and spools of thread, canned goods, round cheeses, salted meats, brooms, bins of rice, sugar, and flour. A beloved part of the store was the long glass candy case with treasures of penny candy — gum, jelly beans, opera bars, and nut loaves.

It passed from the Petersen family to the Fuller family in 1920, who bought both the business and the historic home to the east. Phyllis Fuller was appointed postmaster and held the position until her death in 1964. At that time the store closed and the family returned to ranching. In 1969, the Toone’s purchased it and reopened the building as the General Store in 1970.

Throughout its history it has remained a town landmark and a place of nostalgia and heritage. From the 70’s up to the present it has been closed a number of times, always reopening with a fresh energy.

In 2009 the building was turned into Carlos & Harley’s Fresh-Mex Cantina. The cantina changed ownership in 2021, and currently strives to bring the freshest ingredients and flavors to dining patrons. Many interior renovations have taken place while still honoring the building’s past.
